Professional Journal (education/children)? For class I have to write a paper about an article in a professional journal. It's an education class so it has to be education/children related. Does anyone know the name of any professional journals I may be able to use and where i can get them?
What is a good professional journal article regarding 5th grade education? I have an interview for a 5th grade teaching position coming up. I have had an interview with this district before and one of the questions was to talk about a recent professional journal article I have read about education. I would like to find a relevant source that really pertains to the 5th grade level.
What education journals should I read in preparation for a PhD in policy studies? I will be brief. I have been teaching for 3 years now and must admit I am not enjoying the profession. I am planning on entering into a doctoral program next year in order to get my PhD in leadership and policy studies since I love research (which I haven't done in years). I was wondering what scholarly journals, education magazines, and the like could I begin to read. I want to be prepared for any questions that the panel may have for me next spring and above all be more aware of current happenings in education. Also are the any organizations I could join that would look good on my application.
What is the best way to begin a career in book editing? Hello! Can those of you who know about book editing please give me some advice as to how I can possibly enter into the field? The following is my experience: * B.A. in English literature * certificate in secondary English education * one year of teaching middle school English * several summers of assisting a professor in her research of high school students' grammatical errors in writing (including coding and categorizing errors in essays, organizing data, and proofreading articles to be published in education journals) * a lifelong passion and talent for grammar and spelling My main questions are these: 1. Should I complete an editing certificate program at a university, or would that be a waste of time and money? 2. Would it be worthwhile for me to pursue an internship next summer, when I have time off from work? 3. I would like to stay away from newspapers and magazines and focus on books. Is this a realistic goal? Any help will be very appreciated. Thanks!
For those considering a college education, perhaps you should think again. Thoughts? This is from the Journal of Higher Education. “Also, the past advantage of college graduates in the job market is eroding. Ever more students attend college at the same time as ever more employers are automating and sending offshore ever more professional jobs, and hiring part-time workers. Many college graduates are forced to take some very nonprofessional positions, such as driving a truck or tending bar. How much do students at four-year institutions actually learn? Colleges are quick to argue that a college education is more about enlightenment than employment. That may be the biggest deception of all. Often there is a Grand Canyon of difference between the reality and what higher-education institutions, especially research ones, tout in their viewbooks and on their Web sites. Colleges and universities are businesses, and students are a cost item, while research is a profit center. As a result, many institutions tend to educate students in the cheapest way possible: large lecture classes, with necessary small classes staffed by rock-bottom-cost graduate students. At many colleges, only a small percentage of the typical student's classroom hours will have been spent with fewer than 30 students taught by a professor, according to student-questionnaire data I used for my book How to Get an Ivy League Education at a State University. When students at 115 institutions were asked what percentage of their class time had been spent in classes of fewer than 30 students, the average response was 28 percent. That's not to say that professor-taught classes are so worthwhile. The more prestigious the institution, the more likely that faculty members are hired and promoted much more for their research than for their teaching. Professors who bring in big research dollars are almost always rewarded more highly than a fine teacher who doesn't bring in the research bucks. Ernest L. Boyer, the late president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, used to say that winning the campus teaching award was the kiss of death when it came to tenure. So, no surprise, in the latest annual national survey of freshmen conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles, 44.6 percent said they were not satisfied with the quality of instruction they received. Imagine if that many people were dissatisfied with a brand of car: It would quickly go off the market. Colleges should be held to a much higher standard, as a higher education costs so much more, requires years of time, and has so much potential impact on your life. Meanwhile, 43.5 percent of freshmen also reported "frequently" feeling bored in class, the survey found.” @Tracey: Obviously, but not everyone can afford to go to an Ivy Leaque school. @Rose: Couldn't agree more, I had to go to Bullshit detox after I got my fancy toilet paper. @Johno: True, I wish I could get paid to learn. @Heather: Sound advice, let's hope some ignore it for the sake of diversity in thought. @Heather: Save a pint for me!! EDIT: Honest mistake, recieved this in an e-mail and it is indeed from the Chronicle, not the Journal of Higher Education.
Any idea where I can find this book/journal? For our AS Sociology exam in May we have been given the pre-release material from the exam board OCR. The material is taken from "The British Journal of Sociology of Education" by Ian Barron. If anyone has any idea about where we can find a copy of this or find any other information then please let me know. thank you very much =]
What academic sources could I use to write an essay on the purpose of education? I need to write an essay on "The Purpose of Education" for a philosophy of education course I'm in, I've searched on ebscohost, and similar sites, and can't find any resources on this topic. Does anyone know of any good journal entries, articles, or any other sources I can find ONLINE, that would help me write this mini-paper. The class is more historical based, I've got a book now that deals with plato, and isocrates, and how they felt education differed. Thanks in advance!

Do you think that teacher education degrees teaches too much useless theory? I would love to read your opinions on this. I am in my final year of the Master of Teaching degree at University of Sydney. I believe the degree wastes time on useless and impractical theory and assessments. In our degree, we spend time learning about sociology, the history of education and there is an overemphasis on reflective practise. A large portion of useless theory we learn in our degrees, will never be used in the classroom. Also, we spend time doing essays, case studies, reviewing journal articles and literature reviews. When we become teachers, we do not do any of these things. Why don't they teach us more relevant and practical things instead of getting us to write research papers? I believe that I wasted so much time learning pointless and useless things.
referencing help? hey can some please correct this reference Higgins, 1987; Beloff, 1992, Sex Differences in IQ Score Predictions in Higher Education Journal of Further and Higher Education, Volume 21, Issue 1 February 1997, pages 73 – 82. its ment to be set to Harvard referencin and i cant do it!! :( il b so grateful if u can do it thnx
Why is it okay for a teen to have a secret abortion, but not to get an education? My sister is going to be fourteen in two months. She had an abortion six months ago, and we just found out when my mom 'invaded' her privacy and read her journal. She is on birth control, which we also did not know about. But I am seventeen, and I ended up having to stay with my brother for a while when my mom (a truck driver) got stranded out of state. She is obsessed with homeschooling, so she wouldn't enroll me in school, and yet she also wouldn't teach me anything or give me access to books to study. I tried to enroll myself in school, but couldn't because I didn't have my mom's signature on the paperwork. Why is this okay? Why can't I have my education at the same time that my thirteen year old sister is getting free birth control?

Require some research on multimedia products that use mobile communication tech? Hiya, I?m a Multimedia Developer and I am giving a presentation to a group of clients very soon. I am presenting on the changes that the multimedia industry must undergo to meet the challenges and opportunities that are presented by the growth in mobile communications technology. I require some research on Products and Services (regarding the topic). This constitutes major products and services from the past to present that are relevant to the mobile communications technologies, which have caused evolution of the multimedia industry. I would like some of this research to be on future mobile communications products and services that will impact the multimedia industry. Some of this research can also be regional (Japan (rapidly evolving mobile gadgetry), India (rapidly developing in IT), etc) I will be focusing on markets in particular: Business, Society, Entertainment, & Education Journal?s and books that are relevant on all of this (especially the expected futures of both MM industry & M.C.T.) will also be very good, but I won?t have time to read up on these, and so if the important/key line/s of text, etc could be provided, then this will be really good.

Where can I find information on the history of English education/the English schooling system? Hello there! I am an American university student and I am writing a comparative paper on educational inequality in England and France. I know very little about the English schooling system (primary education and secondary education, how students get into secondary schools, etc). I am looking for more information on the history of the English educational system, as well as information on educational inequality in England. I'm expressly looking for academic journals and other online sources. If you have any info on France too, please let me know!
"Africans" doing better than "blacks" in college? A study published in the American Journal of Education showed that over one-quarter of black college freshmen were immigrants from Africa, rather than native born – twice as many as in the general population. For Ivy League schools, the figure was 40%. Diversity initiatives and race-based financial assistance, all designed to help black Americans, have ended up helping foreigners rather than the native-born – precisely because the programs are race-based. Conservative writer James Taranto in the Wall Street Journal argues “at least as measured by enrollment in elite universities, black immigrants and their children are succeeding in America far more, on average, than blacks whose families have been in the U.S. for generations--i.e., the descendants of slaves. This is a strong argument against the proposition that black underachievement in America is primarily the result of present-day racism.” While many would argue against that claim, Taranto has found some unlikely allies. In promoting diversity in higher education, liberal author Eric Alterman feels affirmative action has outlived its usefulness, and has in fact become a political liability. He would rather see it tied to class, rather than race, saying, “I’m interested in helping poor people, not black people, not Chinese people, not American Indians, not anything.” Do you agree? Is racism still a problem that needs to be addressed directly? Or is the real problem poverty, or lack of opportunity, or something more color-blind like that? Leave a comment.

why is thier more kids as young as 6th graders who become alcoholics and junkies? NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A significant number of children are already drinking by middle school, suggesting that prevention needs to start in the elementary grades, researchers conclude in a new report. In their study of more than 4,000 sixth-graders at Chicago schools, 17 percent of the children had used alcohol in the past year. Those students who'd started drinking were also more likely than their peers to have a range of problems, such as getting into fights, shoplifting or getting into trouble at school. The findings, reported in the journal Health Education and Behavior, suggest that alcohol prevention needs to start in grade school, researchers say. And such prevention efforts should include parents, according to lead researcher Dr. Keryn Pasch, of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health in Minneapolis. One way to do that, she told Reuters Health, would be for school- based programs to include take-home assignments or other activities that involve parents. The study included an ethnically diverse sample of sixth-graders at 61 Chicago schools; 713, or just over 17 percent, said they had drunk alcohol in the past year. These children, Pasch and her co colleagues found, were more likely than their peers to have a range of risk factors for early drinking -- such as delinquent or violent behavior, a lack of adult supervision out of school, and having friends who drank alcohol. "I think it is important for parents to be aware that kids may start drinking at an early age, and that it is important to start discussions about alcohol use early," Pasch said. One way to broach to topic, she suggested, is to look for "teachable moments," such as when drinking is portrayed on television. It's also important, Pasch said, for parents to not only tell their children not to drink, but to also teach them how to refuse alcohol when it's offered to them. SOURCE: Health Education and Behavior, online February 26, 2008 why would anyone wanna drink at all ?
Why are African immigrants to the USA more likely to be educated than even whites or Asians? African immigrants have the highest educational attainment rates of any immigrant group in the United States with higher levels of completion than the stereotyped Asian American model minority.Harvard University, for example, has estimated that two-thirds of their black population is not comprised of traditional black Americans. This is true for other universities such as Brown, Yale, Princeton, Penn, Columbia, Duke and Berkeley. In an analysis of Census Bureau data by the Journal of Blacks in higher education, African immigrants to the United States were found more likely to be college educated than any other immigrant group. African immigrants to the U.S. are also more highly educated than any other native-born ethnic group including white Americans. Some 48.9 percent of all African immigrants hold a college diploma. This is slightly more than the percentage of Asian immigrants to the U.S., nearly double the rate of native-born white Americans, and nearly four times the rate of native-born African Americans. Null/alternative hypothesis, value of test statistic, p-value, conf. interval? Directions: For each problem you must include the following: •Null and alternative hypothesis •One of these: value of test statistic, p-value or confidence interval •Decision •Answer Also, please explain how you came up with your answers so I can learn from this. I have already read my textbook chapters, but am completely confused. I really appreciate this. Cholesterol level of only children A pediatrician claims that only children have a higher cholesterol level than those children with siblings. She tests 100 only children and discovers the mean cholesterol level to be 198. In medical journals it has been reported that the mean cholesterol rate for all children is 190 with a known standard deviation of 15. Test the pediatricians claim at the .05 level of significance and using the traditional method. Salaries of full professors Higher education journals report that the mean salary of all full professors in US colleges and universities is $69,800. A sample of 36 full professors at small, private universities and colleges found the mean salary to be $61,650 with a standard deviation of $5,000. Can we conclude that these smaller, private colleges pay their full professors less than the national average? Test at the 99% confidence level and use the confidence interval method. Passing legislation In order for legislation requiring all college campuses to be smoke-free, there must be at least A 67% vote in favor. A polling organization questions 1,256 registered voters and found that 800 are in favor of this legislation. Use the p-value method and a .10 significance level to determine if the legislation will pass based on the polling organizations findings.

Where can I find information on the history of British education/the schooling system and French education? I am looking for sources - particularly, academic journals or sources available online - on the history of British education/the schooling system and on French education. I am hoping for comprehensive history from the 1900's up until today. I am American and I know very little about how primary or secondary education works in either country. Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated! Also, an explanation of how schools are set up in either country would be appreciated (can parents choose schools for their children, are entrance exams required for secondary schools, etc. and so forth).
Georgia’s Special Education System Is Broken? By Sharon Gudger | Thursday, April 5, 2007, 08:00 AM The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Despite an individualized education plan and supposed accountability, public schools in Georgia did not, could not and would not teach my daughter to read. Only when I put her in private programs did she begin reading. I have worked for 12 years to hold the public schools accountable to help all children learn, but the system is broken. In a recent case I’ve been working on, a Fulton County public school praised the progress of a 10-year-old with high normal intelligence who could only read 100 words in isolation. Yet, this 10-year-old passed the state-mandated tests last year because teachers read the questions to him. The sad truth is this child could be taught to read. I have helped parents in so many counties, and I see similar situations every day. I’ve worked with parents who moved to Georgia and were appalled at the ineffectiveness of special education here. Our state is known
Books explaining liberal education? Does anyone know of any books, journals, or essays explaining liberal education that are relatively easy to follow? I'm trying to find out what is meant by a Liberal Education, what is involved, what is intended, what are the results, and why it is important (especially for human beings and democracy). Also literature reviewing the history of education over the last two hundred years would help. I'm doing a bit of research for a final, and any help would be much appreciated. Thank you so much!
Levels of education and religious beliefs? Just found this study conducted in 1975 comparing intelligence (using SAT scores) with religious beliefs. From the abstract: "Religious Believers as a group were found to be significantly less intelligent and more authoritarian than religious Skeptics." Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion: http://www.jstor.org/pss/1384909 Your thoughts? Oh, I just did. @ The Professor That's the best you got? Damn, that's pathetic. the best I have? This is but one of many studies which I found. If you're really curious I suggest a simple google search to find other studies which show the same corrolation. (then again, according to the results you're a damn idiot so i dont expect you to understand the data implications anyways)
Tell me about Special Education? What is the main goal of having special education in the classroom? Is there any professional journal you can tell me about that would have an article about special education? Why do we need special education?
Gifted Education Specialization? I am planning on taking a test so that I can specialize in gifted education. I will most likely take the Praxis "Gifted Education" test. Does anyone have any advice on resources I could use to study for that test? What are the best books, magazines, journals, and web sites for teachers of gifted students?
need help with a presentation on Higher Education in UK... can anyone help please? I have an online journal article on ranking in higher education institutes (e.g. League Tables). I need to find points in the article that link to social change... and i'm struggling! Is there anyone out there who can help me pick up on some points. The article is called 'Rankings of Higher Education Institutions: A Critical Review' and is by someone called Lee Harvey. It can be found easily on google just by searching the title. Please have a look and see if you can see anything that can be linked to changing society, i would really appreciate any serious answer. Thanks in advance.

why do poor whites score better than wealthy blacks on the SAT? sources range from SAT scores themselves to the journal of blacks in higher education (this will be near the top of the search if you google black vs white SAT) this site in different places shows data from 2005 and 2007. the book the BELL CURVE published about 15 years ago stated data from several years ago showing the same result.
Why so upset over the term "Negro"? Every major historical Negro in history has used the term "Negro" to describe himself and his people. The United Negro College Fund, Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, National Council of Negro Women, The Journal of Negro Education and hundreds of other organizations use "Negro" in their titles. Are there any respectable organizations that use the term "black" in their titles? If "Negro" is so upsetting, why is the term used at all? Give me some thought on this and not the typical radical racial shriek.
is this apa style format? Hare, J.P., 2002. "Physics on a Shoestring: The Shake-A-Gen," Journal of Physics Education, volume 37, p.436-439
Do you believe in Myths? 1. Myth: One in four women in college has been the victim of rape or attempted rape. Fact: This mother of all factoids is based on a fallacious feminist study commissioned by Ms. magazine. The researcher, Mary Koss, hand-picked by hard-line feminist Gloria Steinem, acknowledges that 73 percent of the young women she counted as rape victims were not aware they had been raped. Forty-three percent of them were dating their “attacker” again. Rape is a uniquely horrible crime. That is why we need sober and responsible research. Women will not be helped by hyperbole and hysteria. Truth is no enemy of compassion, and falsehood is no friend. (Nara Schoenberg and Sam Roe, “The Making of an Epidemic,” Toledo Blade, October 10, 1993; and Neil Gilbert, “Examining the Facts: Advocacy Research Overstates the Incidence of Data and Acquaintance Rape,” Current Controversies in Family Violence eds. Richard Gelles and Donileen Loseke, Newbury Park, CA.: Sage Publications, 1993, pp.120-132; and Campus Crime and Security, Washington, D.C.: U.S. Department of Education, 1997. *According to this study, campus police reported 1,310 forcible sex offenses on U.S. campuses in one year. That works out to an average of fewer than one rape per campus.) 2. Myth: Women earn 75 cents for every dollar a man earns. Fact: The 75 cent figure is terribly misleading. This statistic is a snapshot of all current full-time workers. It does not consider relevant factors like length of time in the workplace, education, occupation, and number of hours worked per week. (The experience gap is particularly large between older men and women in the workplace.) When economists do the proper controls, the so-called gender wage gap narrows to the point of vanishing. (Essential reading: Women’s Figures: An Illustrated Guide to the Economic Progress of Women in America, by Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Christine Stolba, published by the Independent Women’s Forum and the American Enterprise Institute, Washington, D.C. 2000.) 3. Myth: 30 percent of emergency room visits by women each year are the result of injuries from domestic violence. Fact: This incendiary statistic is promoted by gender feminists whose primary goal seems to be to impugn men. Two responsible government studies report that the nationwide figure is closer to one percent. While these studies may have missed some cases of domestic violence, the 30% figure is a wild exaggeration. (National Center for Health Statistics, National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey: 1992 Emergency Department Summary , Hyattsville, Maryland, March 1997; and U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, Violence-Related Injuries Treated in Hospital Emergency Departments: Washington, D.C., August 1997.) 4. Myth: The phrase “rule of thumb” originated in a man’s right to beat his wife provided the stick was no wider than his thumb. Fact: This is an urban legend that is still taken seriously by activist law professors and harassment workshoppers. The Oxford English Dictionary has more than twenty citations for phrase “rule of thumb” (the earliest from 1692), but not a single mention of beatings, sticks, or husbands and wives. (For a definitive debunking of the hoax see Henry Ansgar Kelly, “Rule of Thumb and the Folklaw of the Husband’s Stick,” The Journal of Legal Education, September 1994.) 5. Myth: Women have been shortchanged in medical research. Fact: The National Institutes of Health and drug companies routinely include women in clinical trials that test for effectiveness of medications. By 1979, over 90% of all NIH-funded trials included women. Beginning in 1985, when the NIH’s National Cancer Center began keeping track of specific cancer funding, it has annually spent more money on breast cancer than any other type of cancer. Currently, women represent over 60% of all subjects in NIH-funded clinical trails. (Essential reading: Cathy Young and Sally Satel, “The Myth of Gender Bias in Medicine,” Washington, D.C.: The Women’s Freedom Network, 1997.) 6. Myth: Women’s Studies Departments empowered women and gave them a voice in the academy. Fact: Women’s Studies empowered a small group of like-minded careerists. They have created an old-girl network that is far more elitist, narrow and closed than any of the old-boy networks they rail against. Vast numbers of moderate or dissident women scholars have been marginalized, excluded and silenced. (Essential reading: everything by Camille Paglia; Daphne Patai and Noretta Koertge–Professing Feminism: Cautionary Tales from the Strange World of Women’s Studies; and Christina Hoff Sommers–Who Stole Feminism? How Women have Betrayed Women) EDIT: Marx - That's why I posted it, I had more than 10, but ran out of space. Interesting silence from some.
What is the most evil thing of it all? When did Dinosaurs exist? In the Journal of Geological Education, Vol. 31, 1983, David H Milne and Steven D Schafersman tell us "Such an occurrence, if verified, would seriously disrupt conventional interpretations of biological and geological history and would support the doctrine of creationism and catastrophism." Well gentlemen, not only have both man and dinosaur prints been found together in Mexico, New Mexico, Arizona, Missouri, Kentucky and Illinois, but other U.S. locations as well. "When the blood of a seal, freshly killed at McMurdo Sound in the Antarctic was tested by carbon-14, it showed the seal had died 1,300 years ago." (From W. Dort Jr., Ph.D. -- Geology, Professor, University of Kansas, quoted in Antarctic Journal of the United States, 1971. "Despite the bright promise that paleontology provides a means of ‘seeing' evolution, it has presented some nasty difficulties for evolutionists, the most notorious of which is the presence of ‘gaps' in the fossil record. Evolution requires intermediate forms between species and paleontology does not provide them..." (David B. What is a good chemical to write a 5 page essay on? I am going to write an essay and i need a good chemical to write about. these are the requirements ∞ tell what is the chemical name and formula, ∞ how is it made, ∞ what is it used for, ∞ what are the chemical and physical properties, ∞ why did you choose that chemical, and ∞ why do humans use this chemical ∞ how does it harm humanity and other organisms. ∞ how does it help humanity and other organisms. Wikipedia has an article on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negro In current English language usage, "Negro" is generally considered acceptable in a historical context, such as baseball's Negro Leagues of the early and mid-20th century, or in the name of older organizations, as in Negro spirituals, the United Negro College Fund or the Journal of Negro Education. The U.S. Census now uses the grouping "Black or African American." In 2010 the U.S. Census added the term "negro" in efforts to include older African Americans. It's not a derogatory term and I'm surprised this forum does not permit its use.
Could you please help me correct my grammar on my US history essay? By the time they changed their owners, they lost everything but their bodies. Everyone in the family had to work or no food would be sold for that person by the land owner (The Journal of Negro Education, 46-65). For that reason, Washington taught his people at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama in agriculture and specific career that colored people needed for their everyday life. He did not write anything related to the difficulties that farmers face when they sharecrop from their owners. When the slaves were freed and given the promise of equality, they discovered that racism and intolerance kept them from achieving any sort of equal standing with white Americans.
Please help me answer two 'simple' questions about education.? This is for a 'journal entry' assignment i am working on, where i'm asked to complete the sentences with my own thoughts. Question one asks me: "What i want from my education is...", and questions two asks: "When i complete my education, i want to be able to..." Aren't those basically identical questions? How am i supposed to answer questions like that? Is what i want from my education any different from what i want to be able to do after i complete it? Can anyone give me examples of how to answer these?
Would you write and keep an online journal of your previous dates, boyfriends or girlfriends? This is the scenario: You have been on a date or been clubbing and met someone special. Maybe things worked out or maybe it didn’t but you definitely had an experience that you’d want to share with your friends. The website will allow you to write journal entries of previous dates, girlfriends and boyfriends. You’ll be able to create your own profile, produce a journal entry of a previous date or ex girl/boyfriend, create an avatar and alias (instead of a photograph and real name of the ex girl/boyfriend), rate it, put a comment and share it with other users/friends in your network. The essence of the site is self-education and sharing your experiences. Dating is an education experience, preparing you for your best partner. The site could answer questions such as "what did I learn in dating this person?"
what do the harry potter novels teach children? courage and friendship or make black magic attractive ? conservatives argue that harry potter novels made black magic more attractive to children. but where as a 4 year research study found that harry potter novels taught kids moral courage and friendship. Mary Whitney, assistant professor of psychology at Saint Joseph college stated" " The Harry potter novels teach lessons of courage and friendship- not black magic" . Elizabeth Vozzola ,professor of psychology, saint joseph, stated " In fact, the research supported teachers and librarians' contention that the moral message children are getting from these books are lessons about courage and friendship". THE RESEARCH STUDY WAS PUBLISHED IN THE JOURNAL OF RESEARCH IN CHARACTER EDUCATION.) But some people feel that harry potter novels confused children and led them to dark arts. WHOSE OPINION IS CORRECT?
Journal question on "To Kill a Mockingbird"? My teacher asks... "At this point in the novel we have covered three distint themes: Courage, prejudice and education - but not the 'schooling' type of education. What have Scout and Jem learned about courage and prejudice as they apply to both the black and white communities?" I'm not quite sure, any thoughts?
Parents, if your teen became pregnant, would you send her out of town/state to a private home for girls? Would a loving residential setting be a consideration you'd make so that she could avoid the embarassment, shame, ridicule and gossip of her familiar surroundings? Would this be old-fashioned nowadays or would you find a home for pregnant teens (16-19) a good idea? This home would provide life skills training, budgeting and financial planning, healthy lifestyle lessons, parenting skills, social etiquette and conversation skills and planned parenthood classes. Your daughter would be required to continue her education, volunteer at a Assisted Living Home and Journal her stay at the Home. This would be her "home away from home" and she'd share a room with another female. They would have housekeeping chores and be supervised 24/7, not imprisoned but not have unrestricted freedom, either. Do you feel such an environment would be advantageous for a pregnant teen? The father of the baby could visit only with parental consent. Families could visit anytime if not interferring with school. "Sending" her out of town/state only if she wants to go, of course. If the decision was made to give the baby up for adoption instead of terminating the pregnancy, would a loving residential home be an option for her? She would be required to continue her education, attend planned parenthood classes, volunteer at a Assisted Living Home and enjoy social and cultural events, under 24/7 supervision. How much would you pay monthly for her care? She would be taught teambuilding, social etiquette and conversational skills, budgeting and finance and required to Journal her stay while at her "home away from home." Please elaborate as much as you'd like. Remember, she is NOT being forced to go away. The decision is made as a family in her best interest and that of your grandchild. I'm interested in your detailed comments and feedback. I see that using the word "send" was a poor choice. The question isn't to cast flesh of your flesh and bone of your bone into medieval times for torture because she made a mistake. I appreciate all the answers coming in as it's helping with my survey/research. I have posed the question on a more "regulated" site and have received quite different responses. I'm not looking for answers that pleases me. I want to know what parents think. Of course, I've no idea if parents are answering as well as kids. A more "controlled" study is being done. Keep the answers coming! For the uninformed, there are many residential places for pregnant teens in the US today, all paid for by your tax dollars. They are for "bad girls." Just so you'll know also, the question isn't aimed at a situation I know of personally. I am sure there are teenagers who wish their parents felt as most of you feel but the reality is, not all parents support their children. Not all parents are good parents, themselves! Thanks for your answers.
Have you read the Wall Street Journal article about Obama, Ayers, and radical "education?"? http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122212856075765367.html article by Stanley Kurtz On the author: Mr. Kurtz received his undergraduate degree from Haverford College and his Ph.D. in social anthropology from Harvard University. He later taught at Harvard, winning several teaching awards for his work in a Great Books program. He was also Dewey Prize Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Chicago. Stanley Kurtz is a Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. On a wide range of issues, from marriage and family, to higher education reform, to the place of religion in public life, to the challenges of democratization abroad, Mr. Kurtz is a key contributor to American public debates. Looks like Mr. Kurtz's academic credentials are at least as impressive as Senator Obama's. Hydra: your post underscores why Clinton's campaign did not address this. They didn't talk about Alinsky for the same reason. And some other stuff. Hater Police: Those Western imperatives listed there look pretty reasonable. If that's the right wing, where can I sign up?
Thanks!

How can I be creative? Our project in CLE (Christian Life Education) is a journal. We have to record our learnings and my teacher will check them after every quarter. My teacher talked to me earlier and she told me that I should be more creative in making my journal. I tried to be creative but I just can't get any ideas! Can anybody give me some pointers or even just suggestions so that I'd be able to make a nice journal and make my journal entries look beautiful?
What scientific journals publish research briefs? Hi. I'm a graduate student in health research. Was wondering if anyone knew of any journals or has a list of social science journals that publish research briefs (aka brief reports, or brief articles). I'm planning to submit my manuscripts for publication, but they are rather short in length. Any domain in the social sciences would be good: public health, sociology, education, communications, psychology, etc.
I want to start writing any tips or advice? Ya I want to start writing. I've been writing since I was 7 I wrote a journal of short stories mainly of kid stuff like space and stuff, but my dad found the book and threw it away saying I can't write. I later when I was 9 started writing songs about ambition and stuff and hid them all around my room so he couldn't find them. He abandoned me when I was 13 so it was safer to write I wrote a chapter book, and a bunch of poems. 5 which have been published, and a bunch that are in a book around 20 but I probably won't publish them because I was in a depression at the time I wrote them. Any tips though? If i do finally write another novel or chapter book and it gets published about how much will it cost to send in to publish? I have about 3 different novels in my head right now that I want to start, but I'm just to busy to start writing again, it's my senior year in high school. If I want to be an author what kind of education should I move onto for college?
publication in a journal? The thesis I wrote for my masters program has picked up some interest by the chair of the education dept at the university I attended. She is asking me to try to get the piece published in a scholarly journal. I would like to do this as I feel it would be a great resume builder, but at the moment I am on maternity leave with my infant daughter. Is this something that I could do comfortably while on leave or is it too consuming a project? I have no idea how to publish a work and would like to know how involved a process this is.
What is the job market like for those who have PhDs in applied math? Is this degree worth the effort? According to "The Real Science Crisis" in the Chronicle of Higher Education, students "see long periods of training, a shortage of academic jobs, and intense competition for research grants looming ahead of them." The Bureau of Labor Statistics claims that mathematicians will experience average employment growth and keen competition, yet the Wall Street Journal currently ranks "mathematician" as the number one job in the country.

Should Pres. Barack Obama make high school education his priority, at least in Federal District Columbia? President Obama made education a big part of his speech Tuesday night, complete with a stirring call for reform. So we'll be curious to see how he handles the dismaying attempt by Democrats in Congress to crush education choice for 1,700 poor kids in the District of Columbia. The omnibus spending bill now moving through the House includes language designed to kill the Opportunity Scholarship Program offering vouchers for poor students to opt out of rotten public schools. The legislation says no federal funds can be used on the program beyond 2010 unless Congress and the D.C. City Council reauthorize it. Given that Democrats control both bodies -- and that their union backers hate school choice -- this amounts to a death sentence. The Opinion Journal Widget Download Opinion Journal's widget and link to the most important editorials and op-eds of the day from your blog or Web page. Republicans passed the program in 2004, with help from Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, and it has been extremely popular. Families receive up to $7,500 a year to attend the school of their choice. That's a real bargain, given that D.C. public schools spend $14,400 per pupil on average, among the most in the country. To qualify, a student's household income must be at or below 185% of the poverty level. Some 99% of the participants are minority, and the average annual income is $23,000 for a family of four. A 2008 Department of Education evaluation found that participants had higher reading scores than their peers who didn't receive a scholarship, and there are four applicants for each voucher. Vouchers also currently exist in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Louisiana, Utah and Wisconsin. And school choice continues to proliferate elsewhere in the form of tax credits and charter schools. The District's is the only federally funded initiative, however, and local officials from former Mayor Anthony Williams to current Mayor Adrian Fenty and Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee support its continuation. As Ms. Rhee put it in a December 2007 interview with the Journal, "I would never, as long as I am in this role, do anything to limit another parent's ability to make a choice for their child. Ever." Ms. Rhee is working to reform all D.C. public schools, which in 2007 ranked last in math and second-to-last in reading among all U.S. urban school systems on the federal National Assessment of Educational Progress. Without the vouchers, more than 80% of the 1,700 kids would have to attend public schools that haven't made "adequate yearly progress" under No Child Left Behind. Remember all of those Members of Congress standing and applauding on Tuesday as Mr. Obama called for every American child to get some education beyond high school? These are the same Members who protect and defend a D.C. system in which about half of all students fail even to graduate from high school. On Tuesday, Mr. Obama spoke of the "historic investment in education" in the stimulus bill, which included a staggering, few-strings-attached $140 billion to the Department of Education over two years. But he also noted that "our schools don't just need more resources; they need more reform," and he expressed support for charter schools and other policies that "open doors of opportunity for our children." If he means what he says, Mr. Obama won't let his fellow Democrats consign 1,700 more poor kids to failing schools he'd never dream of letting his own daughters attend. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123561668718178625.html

Should I pick Education or Weed and Freedom? Ok so im 18 and half way through my senior year of highschool. I've only started smoking and drinking about 6 months ago. I dont do it every day, infact i havent drank since New Years. I smoke weed about once a week. Since I've started, I've gotten better grades and am not nearly stressed out as much anymore, obviously. However this past saturday night, my parents wouldnt let me go out and do what i wanted (i asked to go over to a friends!). I was really upset and didnt talk to them for 2 days. Typical teenager and parent arguments. But it was monday night wihen I first opened a journal my dying grandmother gave me for my 18th birthday and began to write. I didn't write alot, just about how i have these new habits and how I've changed, then i wrote a short little song. While i was writing my mom came into my room to drop off clothes and saw i was writing. I guess that morning she felt she had to come into my room while i was at school and read my journal. Which makes me so upset, not the fact that she did it, but the fact it was from my sick grandmother...i dont know its just so personal and now it has a bad rap. ANYWAYS, so she obviously found out about the new things i've doing and told my dad. That night we had a chat and they gave me an altimatum and here it is... A) Have all the freedoms that i desire, make my own decisions and still be able to live at my house. So basically go out when i want and do what i want. Which is so enticing. However the catch, My car is only to be used to get to school and they wont pay for me to go to college. Now i have bright futures, that will pay for 75% of my college fee's but i wont have the Florida Pre-Paid that my parents have been saving up for years. I havent gotten in anywhere yet, but i should know soon. I mean i kind of feel i am ready for the independence, i have been sheltered all my life, maybe trying to make it on my own will throw some responsibility i need to one day be a full adult. I have had a job since i was 16 and even with their money, i will still have to have a job while im up there. If need be i can always get a few student loans and apply for scholarships. Not only that i argued last night to my dad, that education shouldnt be a bargaining chip and i got him to agree, so maybe they will pay for college. I know it is a privellage a lot of people would love to have. B.) choice B, how i hate it so much. Live at home, limited freedoms with their choice of telling me i cant go out if they so chose. But i get to keep my car, and keep money for school. However if i dont do well in school, i have to come home and go to a community college or not at all. So i feel like if choose B I'm betting on something that isnt even solid. I didnt even get to the catch yet!!! I have to take drug tests to prove that im "clean". I dont know for how long, probably until i build up their trust again, and i dont know how often. Im not happy about it at all, i really dont want to do them, i think it's kind of rediculous. How much do they really think i do it???? lol crazy. Anyways i'm at a loss and i'd really love to hear what some of you guys think.
Why didn't the media report about a European Journal titled "Barack Hussein Obama and the Triumph of Marxism"? Direct Quote from a European Journal that you will never read in American media: "...it's insane that the United States can even contemplate electing a person such as Obama. Americans will look like a defeated nation to the rest of the world if they pick an individual who has for a generation been a member of an organization dedicated to hating the majority population of the country. That's exactly why so many of their enemies want him elected. Meanwhile, 7 years after Saudi Arabian Muslims staged Jihadist attacks against the United States, the Saudis are systematically infiltrating the Western education system at all levels with pro-Islamic propaganda. Americans are outsourcing their industry to China, their education system to Saudi Arabia and their breeding to Mexico. This is not a wise strategy followed by a country that wants to remain a superpower, or simply continue to exist. A person with such a radical background should never have been close to nomination. The only reason why Obama got so far is because the media deliberately downplayed much of the most troubling information about him. The mass hysteria whipped up in favor of Obama in the press is disturbing. A person who had been a member of an openly anti-black or anti-Asian congregation for a couple of decades would never have been seriously considered for presidency, but being a member of an anti-white congregation is apparently OK. This tells us much about the cultural climate in the West at the moment. The term "Fascist" is so misused that people no longer remember its original meaning. A "Fascist" is now any person to the right of Hillary Clinton, especially if he's white and doesn't like Multiculturalism. However, the personality cult surrounding Obama is a traditional hallmark of Fascist and Communist societies. When an average voter dared to ask a few critical questions about Obama's Socialist sympathies, he was virtually ambushed by members of the mainstream media. This is the kind of behavior one expects to see in authoritarian societies when someone questions the Divine Wisdom of the Great Leader...." http://www.brusselsjournal.com/node/3613
