Literature Based Mathematics?? I am currently planning to do my Ph.D in Mathematics Education. I want to do my research on Literature Based Mathematics Teaching. Here in India we dont have a curriculum that support this method of teaching mathematics in schools. i really want indian education to give this method a try. as it is very sucessful abroad. if anyone of you know any books, journals, sites etc. where i can get the literature, articles, reasearches done on this, please let me know. your suggestion as what should include in this research is also welcome. any help will be highly appericiated. thanks!
can anyone help me find sources for my math education research paper? I need to find at least 2 research sources (actual studies with findings/conclusions) in mathematics education which describe how students learn imaginary/complex numbers. These need to be from peer reviewed sources/peer reviewed journals. I also need 3 teaching idea sources, but i'm not having as much trouble with that as I am with finding the articles on research findings.... I'm almost convinced that there aren't any studies/research on teaching and learning imaginary numbers. These sources need to be from 2000 to present. If anyone can find anything I can use, I'd REALLY appreciate it!!
Are boys better than girls at mathematics? Hey please read this article!!! Do girls really fare worse than boys when it comes to studying science, or more specifically, while doing mathematics? Most people, including academics, seem to think so. No less an authority than the president of Harvard University, Lawrence Summers, reiterated the same thing a few years back when he suggested that the lack of innate aptitude of women was a factor behind their low numbers in science and engineering. He had to resign, of course, but not before another “authority”, the well-known evolutionary psychologist Steven Pinker, argued that Summers' remarks were scientifically justified and should not be considered offensive. Well, too bad for them because it's official now: girls are apparently just as good at math as boys. That was the finding of a study — the largest of its kind ever — released last week in the journal 'Science'. In it, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, said a comparison of standardised mathematical test scores of approximately seven million students showed girls did as well as boys at virtually every grade level — from primary to high school. This reverses study reports from some 20 years ago when girls were found to be lagging behind boys. Obviously, something other than genes are at work here in narrowing the gap. Normally, the perception which prevails among both parents and teachers is that boys are better at math and, as a conditioned reflex, girls keep buying into that. By believing the stereotype they wind up avoiding harder math classes which keep them out of a lot of careers in later life, particularly high-prestige, lucrative ones in science and technology. However, according to the new study, programmes promoting girls' participation in mathematics and science, as has been done in the US, is the ideal solution because the more girls are encouraged to take advanced math classes, the better they do on tests. This clearly suggests that cultural and social factors, not gender alone, influence ability to understand mathematical concepts. The relevance of the encouragement factor in a country like India, where the same mindset is even more rampant, cannot be overstated. Along with encouraging parents to give girls an education, if they could also be persuaded to push them along science streams, it could result in expanded opportunities for their children in the future.
Do you think this is cheating? as far as education? I'm thinking of purchasing my sons math journal to help him with math in school because they use the curriculum everyday mathematics which does not have textbooks for kids to bring home and I disagree with this curriculum but it is what it is and he is having trouble so is it wrong for me to purchase the books to help him? yes im just trying to give him extra help but the only thing im afraid of is if he goes to school and memorizes the answers and not even try to work out the problems i guess i'l have to tell him he needs to do the same thing that we do at home in school. and no i'm not allowing him to take this book to school to copy. he's only in first grade but everyday mathematics don't use alot of algorithms like i was taught which in a way i dont like they use alot of "fun things" i guess
is there a picture of hubert mack thaxton fourth black physicist in the united states online? born March 20, 1909 - died January 3, 1974 place: Lynchburg, Virginia pre-doctorate education: B.S. Mathematics and Physics Howard University 1931 M.S. Mathematics and Physics Howard University 1933. M.S. Mathematics University of Wisconsin 1936. doctoral institution: Ph.D. Physics, University of Wisconsin 1939 Hubert Thaxton studied under the famous nuclear physicist Gregory Breit and was very sharp, but found employment possibilities severely limited even though he published a number of papers over the next eight years [his paper with Arthur Eddington was published during this period: Proton Scattering, Physica 7 (1940), 122-124]. Thaxton's first appointment in 1939 was as Professor and Chair of the Physics Department at North Carolina A & T. After a verbal altercation with the president of A&T, Thaxton moved, in 1944, to Delaware State College as Professor and Chair of Mathematics. In 1946 he moved again, this time to professor and chair of physics at Walter Hervey College in New York City. From 1937 to 1947, Thaxton published papers on protons and proton scattering. Between 1947 and 1971 Dr. Thaxton held a number of jobs in industry - Solar Manufactoring Company, Sperry Gyroscope, Sylvania Electric Company, Balco Research Corporation, Astron Corporation,Curtis-Wright Corporation, Kollsman Instrument Company, Engelhard-Hanovia. Although most of his work was not released to thepublic he did managed to publish articles in such journals as Physical Review, Physica, Journal of Applied Physics, and Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. Dr.Hubert Thaxton was a scientist of great talent and he maintianed a long and tenuous position as an instructor at CCNY. He was appointed full time faculty in 1971, but incredibly he was turned down for tenure and died after a long lawsuit against the school. Thaxton was president of the Harlem Engineering Corporation, Three R Schools Incorporation, and the Harlem Political Club, and was director of the Sloan Foundation Computer-Space Science Center in Harlem. Thaxton maintained a long but tenuous relationship with the CUNY school formerly CCNY - the City College of New York. He was adjunct teacher in the night school from 1946. In 1971 he was apppointed a full-time member of the department, but was later denied tenure. Although he won a subsequence legal case, he died deeply disappointed.
